Hollókő Parish Community

The village was first mentioned in 1343 in connection with news about a preacher called György at the parish of Váralja (now Hollókö).
Archaeological excavations have unearthed the remains of a mediaeval church southwest of the castle, in the valley of a stream next to the Elottyi ridge, close to the former village of the Árpád period. Deeds show that the parish of the village already existed in 1342.
During the reign of Joseph II new parishes were established in the nearby villages, in Nagylóc in 1787 and in Rimóc in 1795, and the parsonage of Szécsény was restored in 1787.
For religious administration the district was controlled from the Archdeacon's Office in Esztergom, and the decanal area of Nógrád had its seat in Szécsény.
In 1782 a surveyor called Münosmeyer indicated a square building with a cross in his drawing of the place.
In 1889 Hollókö had an adobe church building constructed by public subscription and it had a typical conical tower made of wood. Before it, presumably, the village only had a belfry. The building was renovated in the 1970s.
During the research before the renovation it was established that the outer adobe walls on their stone foundation, the ceiling and the structure of the roof date back to the 19th century.
The northern and southern walls of the nave had fissures in them, including the stone foundations.
The eastern side of the tower and the edge of the nave were built of adobe bricks which are smaller than those used in the other parts of the building.
On the site of the church there was originally a belfry, which Flóris Rómer examined in 1862, then it was extended in 1889 with the western part of the nave before the whole building was completed.
In 1990 the church building, dedicated to St. Martin, received a roof of shingles, a choir and period pieces of furniture made in a uniform style.
Precious treasures in it are a carved statue of Piety from Upper Hungary, a flag from the 17th century, and a crucifix – a present from the Esztergom Museum of Christianity.
In 2002 a vestry-room was added to the church; its roof is also made of shingles, like the roof of the tower. The church building of Hollókö is still the most dominant feature in the village.
